Assembly Passes Sauickie Bill Promoting Local Farm Product Subscription Programs

New Jersey’s Community Supported Agriculture programs, which allow consumers to pre-purchase a share of a farm’s seasonal harvest, would be promoted through a bill sponsored by Assemblyman Alex Sauickie and passed by the Assembly on Monday.

Described as a way for locals to get to know their farmers and their food, CSA programs are only limited by Mother Nature and community awareness, said Sauickie.

“Local farms in every part of New Jersey are offering subscriptions to customers as a way to sell their products and connect with their communities, but as a state, we are not doing enough to get the word out about these amazing programs,” Sauickie (R-Ocean) said. “I want more residents, especially younger generations, to have the opportunity to enjoy in-season Jersey Fresh produce like ears of sweet corn, organic tomatoes, or free-range eggs and to support the success of our farmers.”

Sauickie’s bill (A3108) requires the state Department of Agriculture to promote CSA programs offered by state farms, maintain a dedicated CSA website, create and provide distinct labels and information to farmers for marketing purposes, encourage schools to participate in CSAs, and designate the last week in February as CSA Week.

“We can all play a part in ensuring our family-run farms continue to grow and provide healthy food for future generations of New Jerseyans. Putting a spotlight on CSAs helps us achieve that goal,” Sauickie said.

The New Jersey Farm Products Publicity Fund can be used to offset the costs of the bill and publicize the importance of community-supported agriculture.
