Sauickie Getting Results for Vets & Military Families

After serving only two months as a legislator, Assemblyman Sauickie has notched several victories for veterans and military families.

As a member of the Assembly Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Sauickie has sponsored several bills moving through the legislative process. One, now before the governor for approval or veto, authorizes military service members, spouses and dependents with an out-of-state domicile to operate motor vehicles in New Jersey (A325).

Two Sauickie-sponsored bills have passed the Assembly and are now before the state Senate:

One of those (A119) allows members of the NJ National Guard or a reserve component called to active federal military service, who met a fire department’s maximum age requirement at the closing date of a civil service examination, to maintain their eligibility for the job if they exceeded the maximum age while activated.

Another (A2722) permits a veteran to receive credit toward licensure as a licensed practical nurse if the veteran completed certain military medical training programs.

Additional measures backed by Sauickie have been approved by the Assembly Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee:

One (A310) excludes veterans’ benefits when calculating the financial obligation for care at a psychiatric facility.

Another (A480) extends, from six months to one year, the validity of a temporary instructional certificate issued to military spouse to be able to teach in New Jersey, and also requires expedited processing of a military spouse’s application for a NJ instructional certificate and reduced fees for the spouse to obtain a certificate.

An additional bill (A2438) provides that 100 percent disabled veterans are not required to submit to the Motor Vehicle Commission certain documentation to renew their parking privileges.

Finally, another bill (A3695) requires the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to notify certain veteran organizations, county officers and municipal registers of the names of persons buried or cremated in state veteran cemeteries.

“We in public office must never stop working for veterans and military families, because they deserve our support and their needs are important,” Sauickie (R-Ocean) said. “Working with veterans’ advocates and others to make life easier and fairer for them, and to thank them, is a task that I’m glad to take on.”
